Vulva or Vaginal Dryness? Understanding the difference.

Do you ever feel dryness in your vulva or your vagina? Do you know the difference? It seems that the words ~ vagina and vulva ~ are often interchangeably used.  The difference is significant to understand. The vulva encompasses the external parts of the female genitalia while the vagina is the internal tube connecting the vulva to the cervix and uterus. As women, we should be better acquainted with our bodies to understand the difference and can confidently address any concerns. For a full definition of all of the elements and a thorough diagram of the vulva, please refer to Jane Hailes' Vulva & Vaginal Irritation.

Am I experiencing Vulva Dryness or Vaginal Dryness?

Since the vulva is the outside part of the female genitalia, treatments or external factors cause most vulva dryness and vulvar irritation. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • Tight-Fitting or Irritable Underwear
Whilst they are not strictly limited to this, and for a comprehensive list of what causes vulvar irritation, please refer to Jane Hailes' Vulva & Vaginal Irritation.

On the other hand, the
vagina is the internal part of the female genitalia, which may cause dryness for many different reasons. The most common cause of vaginal dryness is Hormonal changes usually onset by:
  • Menopause
  • Chemotherapy
  • Birth Control
As you can see, both vulva and vaginal dryness can be brought on by common lifestyle elements. Read more in Women's Health Magazine in their recent article ~ Vaginal Dryness.

How do I know the difference between Skin Dryness and Vaginal Atrophy?

Drying of the vulva and vagina is common in many women. Yet, there is still a more common concern amongst menopausal women ~ do I suffer from Vaginal Atrophy? Vaginal Atrophy means that the vaginal wall becomes thin, dry, and inflamed when estrogen production is reducedIt is often a result of menopause and hormonal changes. Vaginal Atrophy can cause pain during sex, as well as urinary issues.

The main difference to understand here is that Vaginal Atrophy is internal, and as such, requires a very different treatment to vulva dryness. Whilst external creams can help, you should speak to your healthcare professional to guide you through your concerns and treatment.

I suffer from dryness in my intimate area- Should I use internal or external treatment?

Now that we have a better understanding between the vulva and the vagina, it is easier to understand why it is essential to treat each part differently.

Rejuvenate is unique, patented, and supported by REJUCREAM's panel of experts. It is a topical intimate care cream formulated for moisturizing the vulva. You could say it is the ultimate vulva care cream ~ it hydrates, plumps, and helps with intimate dryness.

The vagina needs internal treatment, so different methods of care are required.  These treatments may include prescription medications or lubricants entering the vagina wall.

Whatever the reason for your dryness, it is essential to understand the issue and know whether the solution can be as simple as applying our Rejuvenate cream daily for the added layer of moisture, or whether it requires professional treatment.
